Kumbh Mela 2025: Safety Measures Tightened After Deadly Stampede

A tragic stampede at the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in the death of 30 people, with at least 60 others sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred yesterday morning at the Sangam area, where a massive crowd had gathered to take the holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

In response to the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath convened a video conference with police and administrative officials from multiple districts. Following the discussions, several key measures were announced to improve crowd management and ensure the safety of devotees.

Authorities have declared the Kumbh Mela area a "No Vehicle Zone" and have revoked all vehicle entry passes, including those for VVIPs. Even special passes will not be accepted. Vehicles arriving from neighboring districts are being stopped at the borders, and a ban on four-wheeler entry into Prayagraj will remain in effect until February 4.

To further ease congestion, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to relocate street vendors to open spaces, ensuring smoother traffic flow. While emphasizing that devotees should not face any obstacles in reaching the Kumbh Mela, he has also ordered an increase in police patrolling and instructed officers to ensure a seamless return route for pilgrims.

Additionally, with many visitors also traveling to Varanasi, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, and Mirzapur after attending the Kumbh Mela, authorities have been directed to strengthen security in these regions to prevent any untoward incidents.
