Savitri bridge collapse: Driver's body found in the sea, 100 km away

The British-built bridge on the Savitri river in Raigad district in Maharashtra was washed away, taking along with it an unknown number of vehicles and at least one bus on Wednesday night. While there is no trace of the vehicles, the bodies are being found far and near. The body of the driver of a bus was washed 100 kilometres away, where the Savitri river meets the Arabian sea. A body of a woman was found enmeshed in a tree, 7km from the collapsed bridge. Search parties have fanned out in the riverine route to look for bodies and vehicles. One of them is armed with a 300-kilo magnet to look for the drowned vehicles. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered that search should be mounted in the river and the sea for the bodies. There is no estimate of the number of persons who had drowned following the bridge collapse. Three years ago, the British authorities had advised their Indian counterparts that the bridges built by them were old and ought to be repaired or rebuilt. The bridge over the Savitri river is among the ones suggested by them to be rebuilt entirely.
