Let girls dance in bars than push them into streets: SC

The Supreme Court on Monday found fault with the Maharashtra government for defying its earlier order on granting licence to dance bars, saying its better for girls to dance in the bars than to beg in the streets or do worse. The court criticised the government for framing stringent rules that dance bars within a kilometre of an educational institution be banned. The court said: `Dance is a profession. If it is obscene, then it loses its legal sanctity.' The Maharashtra government has framed the rules in such a manner as to make life difficult for the owners to run dance bars. The State government had banned the bars jeopardising the lives of hundreds of girls in Mumbai. The Supreme Court intervened in the matter, but the government framed rules making it difficult to run the dance bars.
