Student, autodriver jailed in case of driving sans licence

Even as the Hyderabad traffic police was threatening vehicle owners not to drive their vehicles without licence or helmet, the first person to be jailed under the new rules was a student, Ismail. The student was sentenced for one day in jail on Friday afternoon by the Nampalli court. The traffic police presented Ismail and an auto-driver, Edukondalu, before the court for driving without licence. The court told the two not to drive without licence again. They were sentenced for one day in jail. The traffic rules have been tightened since March 2. But there was no instance of awarding jail sentence so far. The student and the autodriver are the only two persons sentenced so far. The RTA is expected to simplify and expedite the procedures so the vehicle owners can breathe a sigh of relief.
