Suu Kyi nominates her schoolmate for President of Myanmar

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy Party has fielded her classmate and former driver, Htin Kyaw, aged 69, as the party nominee for President of Myanmar. The NLD has achieved a landslide victory in the November 2015 election. As a result the country President would certainly be from the NLD. Aung San cannot stand for the presidentship, because she is barred on account of her children from her British husband being abroad. The Army junta-scripted Constitution had thus barred Suu Kyi on the ground of having relatives abroad. Suu Kyi had with the nomination of Htin Kyaw surprised her own NLD MPs. He runs the charitable foundation headed by Suu Kyi. There had been months of speculation for the key position. She has thus surprised the country by her choice. Htin Kyaw will face two other contenders, one from the Lower House, and the other from the Military. The procedure is expected to take days before the election. Suu Kyi had urged the people to back Htin for achieving the party's goals peacefully.
