Smriti Irani fights back as Congress makes capital of Rohith suicide
As a section of the media and the Congress mounted an attack on Union HRD Minister, after losing out on the shady JNU happenings, and reverted to HCU research scholar Rohith Vemula's suicide case, these sections are demanding an apology from Smriti Irani for misguiding Parliament on the circumstances of the suicide. The minister, who relied on the Telangana police version of Rohith suicide, had said that the HCU student did not receive medical help even when he was in the throes of death. The doctor who attended on Rohith, Dr Rajasri, of HCU, had said when she checked the research scholar he was already dead. This still does not rule out the Telangana police contention that medical help was not allowed by interested parties to reach Rohith who was then in the throes of death because the vertebra did not pierce medulla oblongata fully. Only a top level inquiry could settle the matter. The medical records need to be produced so eminent doctors could go into the issue. How could a dispensary doctor revive someone in the throes of death? Rohith should have been rushed to a public hospital. Only a top level inquiry could establish whether the Telangana police charge stands, and by extension Smriti Irani's announcement holds good or not. As the Grand Old Party that brought independence to the country, the Congress could not jump to conclusions and demand apologies inasmuch as it has always got away one way the other. The opposition onslaught against Smriti's handling of the situation in campuses across the country maybe one side of the coin, but the other side is interested parties making things difficult for the country by hunting with the students and running for brownie points. Smriti said in parliament: “Mujhe suli pe chadhaya jaa raha hai kyunki mere vibhaag ne patra likha (I am being hanged because my ministry wrote the letter for an inquiry)." “Rahul Gandhi made the most of the opportunity and visited the HCU hostel twice, something which he had never done before. Have you ever seen him visiting the same place twice? Did he do the same when 600 students died (committed suicide) in the Telangana movement? "Rohith blamed no one, yet Rahul tried to use this child as a political tool. The child in his suicide note said that no one is responsible for my death, yet you seek to use this child for your own political ends,” she charged. That's where the matter stands, and it is for a top inquiry to establish the truth about the trouble in campuses.
