About 10,000 Streetcars Named Desire are on sale. Can you believe Benz, BMW, Jaguar, Audi, Bentley and Hammer cars are available in Chennai for as little as Rs.2 lakhs to Rs. 3 lakhs. But there is a catch: These cars are simply showpieces as of now. In all, 30,000 cars have been damaged during the month-long rains and flooding in Chennai. The flood water level was above ground floor. So almost all the cars in the city were damaged. Of the 30,000 cars, about 20,000 were salvaged after repairs. But 10,000 cars were irretrievably damaged. The car owners have claimed insurance against their cars and got back their monies. The 10,000 damaged cars are now parked on Chennai-Bangalore highway at the Gora truck parking area. There is a heavy demand for these showpieces. The car companies have dismissed them as junk. But the interested people say they know excellent car repairmen who can get them back in shape. They are prepared to pay as much as Rs. 2 lakh to Rs.3 lakh to own them. If the cars cannot run on the road, they can at least remain as showpieces in films, wherein the cars don't run but the background effects make it appear to be running.
