CJI Gavai Reflects on Journey from Humble Beginnings in Farewell Speech
New Delhi: In an emotional farewell address, Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on Friday reflected on his journey from a modest background to the nation's highest judicial office, stating that the "Constitution of India has made this impossible thing" possible. He handed over the mantle to CJI-designate Justice Surya Kant.

Speaking at a function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Gavai recalled his childhood in a semi-slum area and credited his parents and the constitutional values instilled by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for shaping his career. He served for over 40 years as a lawyer and a judge.

The outgoing CJI highlighted several landmark judgments delivered during his tenure that were close to his heart, including those on social justice, personal liberty, and the environment. He referred to the "bulldozer justice" case, where the court affirmed that the right to shelter is a fundamental right. He also spoke about his work on the environment bench, which passed crucial orders for the protection of the Aravalli hills.

Justice Gavai emphasised the symbiotic relationship between the bar and the bench, calling them "two wheels of the golden chariot of judiciary." On the administrative side, he noted the appointment of over 100 judges to various high courts and efforts to streamline the case listing process.

Looking ahead, Justice Gavai said he plans to rest before considering future endeavours, expressing a desire to work for tribal communities in his district.
