Rs 1.33 Lakh Crore Investment in Five Years — Google’s Key Announcement on Visakhapatnam AI Hub
A historic agreement that could reshape Andhra Pradesh’s future has been signed. Global technology giant Google has announced plans to establish a world-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam. Google Cloud Global CEO Thomas Kurian declared that the company would invest USD 15 billion (approximately ₹1.33 lakh crore) over the next five years for this project. Significantly, this will be Google’s largest AI centre outside the United States.
The landmark agreement was signed in New Delhi at the Taj Man Singh Hotel between representatives of the Andhra Pradesh government and Google. The event was attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, State IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and senior Google executives.
Speaking at the event, Thomas Kurian said, “With the support of the Government of India and the State of Andhra Pradesh, we are launching an AI hub in Visakhapatnam with a capacity of 1 gigawatt. We plan to further expand its capacity in the future.” He explained that the goal is to transform Visakhapatnam into a global connectivity centre. To achieve this, Google will establish a dedicated undersea cable system to link the hub with international networks.
Kurian stated that the facility will use cutting-edge Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which will double the speed of AI processing. He noted that services such as Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail could soon be operated and delivered globally from India. “Through this hub, we aim not only to advance technology but also to train local youth and help them become world-class AI professionals. This is our contribution to the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision,” Kurian said.
