Salman Khan sentenced for 5 years in jail in hit and run case
Mumbai, May 6, 2015: A Mumbai sessions court has held Bollywood actor Samlan Khan guilty in the 2002 hit and run case and sentenced him for 5 years of imprisonment. The Police then took him into custody on the orders of the judge. He is presently lodged in the Arthur Road jail. It may be recalled that Salman Khan's reckless driving on September 28, 2002,killed a man sleeping on the Mumbai pavement and severely injured four others. The accident grabbed national as wells as international attention. Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande said that the actor was driving his Toyota Land Cruiser himself recklessly in a drunken state but had misled the court saying that his driver was driving the vehicle when the accident took place. "You were driving the car when the accident took place," the judge said , looking at Salman Khan who was present in the court. "Do you know that you will get 10 years in jail for your crime? Is there anything you want to tell?" the judge asked Salman Khan who didn't reply. Salman's counsel requested the judge to give him short term punishment keeping in view his social services to the public. This could be possibly the reason for the judge awarding 5 years in jail. The court said all the charges against Salman were proved by the prosecution and he was guilty for his reckless driving that killed a sleeping and innocent person.
