India Targets US Goods with Higher Duties Amid Trade Dispute

India is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on selected imported goods from the United States. This decision has been formally conveyed to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This stringent move comes in response to the higher duties imposed by the United States on Indian steel and aluminum products. According to the report submitted by India to the WTO, the country plans to significantly increase import tariffs and withdraw existing concessions on certain chosen American products.

India expressed concern that the unilateral trade decisions made by the United States have adversely affected Indian exports valued at approximately $7.6 billion. India had previously criticized the protectionist stance adopted by the United States.

It is widely known that after Donald Trump assumed office for the second time as President of the United States, he imposed heavy tariffs on imports from several countries. As the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, India was significantly affected by these tariff measures.

In this context, India is presenting its position assertively at the WTO in an effort to safeguard its trade interests.

This latest development gains importance amid reports that trade negotiations between India and the United States have reached a final stage. Previous reports indicated that India had shown willingness to offer key concessions as part of the agreement, aimed at reducing its trade deficit with the United States. However, the impact of the current retaliatory measures remains to be seen.
