Government Warns Media Against Live Broadcasts of Military Operations

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a crucial advisory to all media channels, news agencies, and social media users regarding the broadcasting and reporting of sensitive defence and security-related developments. The advisory reiterates the guidelines previously released last month, emphasizing responsible conduct in live broadcasts and news stories based on “sources close to the matter.”

The Ministry clarified that, in the interest of national security, media outlets must refrain from any real-time coverage, video transmission, or publication of reports based on unverified "close source" information relating to defence operations or troop movements. It warned that premature disclosure of sensitive information could benefit hostile entities and potentially compromise the effectiveness of military operations and the safety of personnel.

Citing past events such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar plane hijack, the Ministry reminded the media of the adverse outcomes that had previously resulted from unrestricted coverage. The advisory stressed that media, digital platforms, and individuals have a vital role in safeguarding national interests, and that along with legal responsibilities, it is a moral duty to ensure that ongoing operations and the safety of security forces are not endangered by their actions.

The Ministry further highlighted Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which mandates that during anti-terror operations conducted by security forces, television channels are only permitted to broadcast information provided by a government-appointed officer at designated intervals. Live telecasts of such operations are explicitly prohibited.

It warned that violations of these rules would be treated as breaches of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, and necessary action would be taken accordingly. As such, all TV channels have been urged not to live broadcast anti-terror operations or troop movements, and to strictly limit coverage to updates officially issued by designated government authorities until the operations are concluded.

The Ministry appealed to all concerned parties to exercise vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility, and to uphold the highest standards of national service.
