MS Dhoni Opens Up About His IPL Future and Retirement Plans

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has made key remarks regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni, who will turn 44 this July, clarified that he has not yet taken any decision on whether IPL 2025 will be his final season. He explained that while he plays for only two months a year, he must spend the remaining six to eight months preparing his body, and whether it can continue to endure that strain is something he still needs to assess. He made these comments following the match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Dhoni expressed happiness over the unwavering support he continues to receive from fans, stating that their affection brings him immense joy.

According to CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, Dhoni is currently struggling with knee issues, which is preventing him from spending extended time at the crease. In Wednesday's match, after Dewald Brevis was dismissed, Dhoni entered the crease in the 13th over and supported Shivam Dube, eventually hitting a crucial six that led the team to victory.

With CSK now out of the playoff race, Dhoni said the remaining matches are being used to prepare the team for the IPL 2026 season. He mentioned that opportunities are being given to young players like Urvil Patel and Dewald Brevis. In his debut match, Urvil Patel scored 31 runs off just 11 balls, while Brevis achieved a half-century off 22 balls.

"Players can be assessed in nets and practice games, but it is only in actual matches that their skill and mental resilience are truly revealed. It is not just technically superior batters who succeed, but those with the mental strength to understand the game and anticipate a bowler’s strategy," said Dhoni. He added that the team is looking for exactly these qualities in young players.
