UK Imposes Restrictions on Visas for Pakistani Citizens

The United Kingdom has imposed restrictions on visa issuance for Pakistani nationals amid a surge in asylum applications, according to a report by The Times. Citing growing concerns over individuals overstaying their student, work, or visitor visas and subsequently applying for asylum, the British government is set to tighten its visa regulations.
In addition to Pakistani citizens, the new restrictions will also apply to applicants from Nigeria and Sri Lanka seeking study and work visas. The report noted that individuals arriving for education or employment are increasingly attempting to settle permanently, prompting the government to consider tougher pre-screening processes.
According to official statistics, in 2024, a total of 108,000 asylum applications were filed in the United Kingdom, of which 10,542 were submitted by Pakistani citizens—the highest among all nationalities. The UK government identified a pattern where individuals initially arrive on valid visas but later file for asylum, leading to a significant rise in such cases.
To address this issue, visa applications will now be subjected to profiling measures to assess the risk of future asylum claims. Applications deemed high-risk may be rejected. Additionally, visa holders who fail to demonstrate financial independence may be barred from accessing housing and facilities funded by UK taxpayers.
The government has already introduced strict policies in 2024, preventing care workers and international students from bringing dependents. As a result of these measures, visa applications declined by 37% by March 2025.
