Trump Administration Accuses Harvard of Policy Breaches, Stops $2.2 Billion Grant

The Donald Trump administration has delivered a major blow to Harvard University by halting all federal grants to the institution. Linda McMahon, the United States Secretary of Education, made this announcement on Monday, declaring that Harvard would no longer receive any federal funding. She shared a letter addressed to the university's president online, citing allegations of tolerating antisemitism on campus and non-compliance with government directives as the reasons behind the decision.

Over the past several months, the Trump administration has been increasing pressure on Harvard and other leading academic institutions in the United States. Accusing them of failing to curb antisemitism on their campuses, the administration has threatened cuts to their budgets, tax exemptions, and restrictions on the enrollment of foreign students. In her letter, Linda McMahon accused Harvard of failing to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities, lacking transparency, and not maintaining academic standards.

The administration had already frozen $2.2 billion in federal funds due to be disbursed to Harvard in mid-April, citing the university's refusal to accept government oversight regarding admissions, hiring practices, and political positioning. At the time, officials stated that a review was underway of the total $9 billion in federal funds linked to Harvard.

With the latest letter, Linda McMahon made it clear that no new grants would be provided to Harvard in the future. The Trump administration’s actions are reportedly part of a broader campaign targeting American universities, aimed at dismantling diversity programs that were created to address antisemitism and the historical suppression of minorities. These measures have raised widespread concerns about threats to academic freedom across the United States.
