Man fires shots near US Embassy in Turkey, arrested

Ankara, Dec 20 : Security officials have detained a man who opened fire near the US Embassy in Ankara, located about 100 metres from the site where a Turkish policeman assassinated Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov.

According to a local TV channel, the shooter was detained by security personnel at the US embassy and the Monday night incident did not cause any casualties, Efe news agency reported.

The assailant opened fire with a shotgun and shouted: "I swear to God, do not play with us."

Following the attacks, the US announced closure of its embassy and consulates in Turkey on Tuesday.

Iran has also announced the closure of its embassy and consulates, and recommended to its citizens not to travel to Turkey.

Meanwhile, Russia has sent an 18-member team of experts to Turkey to investigate the assassination of Ambassador Karlov, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

"The group will work in Turkey as part of an investigation into the murder of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov," Peskov said.
