Telangana tops in non-veg food consumption

The newly-created State of Telangana has immediately acquired a distinction of topping in the non-vegetarian eating habits in the country. In Telangana, almost everyone is a non-vegetarian in that 98.7% people are non-vegetarian. India as a whole is also non-vegetarian in that there is very little difference between one state and another in the non-vegetarian eating habits. The survey was conducted in Sample Resgistration System in 2014 and the survey results released through Registrar-General of India. In Telangana, almost every household has to have non-vegetarian food in almost every function. After Telangana which tops with 98.7% households comes West Bengal with 98.55% people who are consumers of non-vegetarian food. Orissa and Kerala come next with 97.35 and 97%, respectively. The supposed `Shuddh Sakhahari' State of Gujarat has seen a jump of 40% people, both men and women, consuming non-vegetarian food in the survey. The Brahmins of West Bengal and Kashmir do not consider fish as non-vegetarian food. It is not known whether the sample survey has taken this factor into account. Non-vegetarian food is thus the rule than the exception in India.
