National Herald case: ED begins fresh probe against Sonia, Rahul

New Delhi, Sept 19: Based on legal opinion, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is believed to have begun a fresh investigation into the alleged money laundering act with respect to the purchase of the National Herald newspaper by the Young Indian, reports said. The case involves president of Congress party Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders, reports said. Last year, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy is said to have appealed to the ED to register a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against the above leaders in the case. At that time, the ED is said to have expressed its inability to do so as no investigating agency had registered an FIR based on the allegations. Since then, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appointed a new ED chief. With the result, the agency is now revisiting Dr. Swamy’s complaint. It now feels it can inquire into the case given that the trial court has taken cognisance of the same, reports said.
