Speaker Ayyannapatrudu Slams MLAs for Skipping Assembly After Signing Attendance

During a session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Speaker K. Ayyannapatrudu made strong remarks, expressing frustration over some MLAs attending the assembly like "thieves" who sign the attendance register and then leave without participating. He stated that such behavior was inappropriate and questioned how elected representatives could act in this manner. The Speaker’s comments, directed towards members of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), have sparked widespread attention.

The incident occurred on Thursday, following the Governor’s speech, when seven YSRCP MLAs reportedly signed the attendance register and left the assembly. Taking serious note of this, Speaker Ayyannapatrudu remarked that such members are unnecessary in his view if they do not actively participate in assembly proceedings.

He suggested that elected representatives should attend sessions and speak, rather than merely sign their names and depart. Furthermore, he criticized some members for leaving midway without waiting for the government's response to the questions they raised. The Speaker emphasized that such practices are not acceptable.

To underline his concern, Speaker Ayyannapatrudu read out the names of the seven MLAs who signed the attendance register but were absent from the assembly during the proceedings. His remarks have triggered considerable debate over the responsibilities of elected representatives and their accountability in legislative sessions.
