Hyderabad’s SR Nagar Locals Demand Ban on Hostels in Residential Area

Residents of the EWS Colony in SR Nagar, Hyderabad, have put up banners opposing the establishment of hostels in their locality. The move has sparked discussions about the increasing number of hostels in the area and the challenges they pose to the residents.

The EWS Colony was originally developed by the housing board, with most houses built on plots of less than 100 square yards. Additionally, the roads in the area are narrow, making it suitable only for residential purposes and not for commercial activities.

However, in recent times, the number of hostels in the colony has increased significantly, causing inconvenience to the local residents. The existing infrastructure in the area is sufficient only for the colony's residents. With each hostel accommodating at least 50 individuals, the strain on facilities has grown. The residents have also expressed concerns about hostel occupants spending late hours on the streets due to a lack of space in their rooms, as well as the large number of two-wheelers being parked on the roads, creating further difficulties.

Despite multiple complaints to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the Water Board, and the police department, the residents claim that no action has been taken. Frustrated by the lack of response, they have now put up banners declaring that hostels are not allowed in the area.

Currently, more than ten hostels are operating in the colony, with additional constructions reportedly underway. The residents have urged authorities to take action against hostel buildings constructed without proper permissions. They are now planning to approach senior GHMC officials to address their grievances.
