Central Government Clarifies Stance on Working Hours Proposal
The central government has once again clarified its position on the issue of increasing working hours, stating that there is no proposal under consideration to extend work hours to 70 or 90 hours per week. This comes amid widespread discussions sparked by comments from several corporate leaders on the matter.
Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, provided a written response in the Lok Sabha, addressing a question raised by members. She stated that labour-related matters fall under the concurrent list, meaning both the central and state governments have the authority to regulate and enforce labour laws within their respective jurisdictions.
She further explained that while the implementation of labour laws in central government enterprises is overseen by the Central Industrial Relations Machinery (CIRM) and its inspection officials, enforcement at the state level is managed by respective state governments.
