40 villages under threat as Kautalam summer tank develops breaches

Kurnool, March 15, 2015: People of 40 villages in Kurnool district are being forced to vacate as the Summer Storage tank at Kautalam is on the verge of breach threatening submergence of the nearby areas. The summer storage tank, built in 2009 with a cost of Rs. 4 Cr, has started leaking since yesterday as cracks have developed at vulnerable points. The storage tank supplies drinking water to 11 nearby villages and some irrigation water to agricultural lands in some more villages. With leakages threatening to develop into a major breaches, officials have swooped down on the tank area and asked people to vacate their villages immediately as bigger breaches may happen at any time. People in several villages said the tank was built with poor quality materiel because of which they are subjected to suffering now.
