Eight sentenced to death in Saurav Chaudhary murder case

Eight of the 13 accused in the Saurav Chaudhary murder case in West Bengal in 2014 were awarded death sentence by the Calcutta District Court on Tuesday. The hearing in the murder case continued for 2 years. The court held 12 of the 13 accused guilty of murder and passed the death sentence against eight of them. Of the remaining four, the court ordered life sentence for one of them and 4 years' rigorous imprisonment each for three of the accused. The facts of the sensational case are that Saurav campaigned against the illegal sale of drinks and narcotics in his college premises. This was chafed at by those who made profit by the sale of drinks and narcotics. On the night of July 5, 2014, they accused called out Saurav from his house, and killed him. They cut his body into pieces and threw the body parts on the railway track. The Chaudhary family hailed the court verdict. The accused said they would fight the verdict in a higher court.
