Centre sends in paramilitary forces to NIT Srinagar

The Centre seems to have taken the security of the 1500 National Institue of Technology students in Srinagar seriously by sending in some 600 paramilitary forces for the safety of the outstation students in the strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir. That is there is one jawan for two students' security. A simple adverse result in the India-West Indies match was the trigger for the happenings in the technology institution, which should have nothing to do with sports. But then the outstation students were crestfallen following the defeat and the Kashmiri students showed their true colours by jumping in joy. Having a large number of non-Kashmiris on its rolls, as is the case with all NITs and IITs in India, the NIT Srinagar is already on the sights of the separatists and terrorists in Kashmir. It is because of the fear that they could become sitting ducks that the Centre had to act fast by deploying Central forces in the NIT. The local police, on the other hand, went by local-non-local criterion by thrashing the otustation boys. Tension is bound to continue unless there is some change for the better in the mind of the students. They are expected to take studies seriously and forget about non-academic matters such as cricket matches.
