Onions cut both ways & bring tears to growers
Onions cut both ways bringing tears to someone. So far onions have been bringing tears to people who depend on the commodity for any type of cooking. Now the prices of quality onions have fallen to Rs.700 a quintal. Retailers should not be charging more than Rs. 8 per kg. The price of low quality onions has come down to Rs.400 a quintal! That is, the people can hope to buy onions for as little as Rs.5 a kg! The low prices are bringing tears now to growers, whose agriculture cost for growing one quintal onions works out to Rs.900, whatever the quality. That is the farmer in Nasik in Maharashtra would not be getting any profit. On the contrary, he would face losses by growing onions. The farmers are alleging that onion imports were the cause of the low costs. The farmer now bemaons he will lose much more by reaching his onion produce to the market. Many years ago, the Western Maharashtra strongman, Sharad Pawar, had invited the different State governments to just send lorries to the Nasik area and pick up as much quantity of onions as they could for free. The situation now is similar. But then this is once in 25 years phenomenon. If for 24 years, the onion grower could make money, what if in one season he is at a loss?
