South TN coast warned of giant waves
After the deluge in Chennai city, the southern Tamil Nadu coast has been warned of 8 to 10 ft high waves lashing the coast. The National Maritime Information Centre which made the forecast pinpointed the coast from Kulachal in Kanyakumari district to Kilakkarai in Ramanadhapuram district as prone to the high waves. There could be much damage in these coastal areas.
The centre said the high waves may last till Monday night. These will be accompanied by heavy wind of 55 kmph. Fisherman have been warned against going out to the sea.
In Kanyakumari, tourist trips to the Vivekananda rock and Tiruvalluvar statue have been temporarily suspended in view of the high waves.
In the wake of the maritime warning, the Tamil Nadu government has readied Tsunami teams to take up rescue work.
The Maritime agency said that the sea level in South Tamil Nadu is expected to rise.
