Scribbled notes are also legal tender: RBI Governor
The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that currency notes on which there are scribblings are also valid. The clarification follows rumours in social media that currency notes with scribblings are no legal tender from New Year's Day. The RBI Governor, Raghuram Rajan, clarifies: "So far as I know, the rumour mill in social media such as Whatsapp that currency notes with scribblings are not valid from New Year's Day is false. Such notes are not banned. They are also legal tender." The Governor said that the RBI policy was to phase out damaged ones and replace them with new currency notes. This does not mean that the damaged notes are not legal tender. They can still be used anywhere by anybody. He urged the people not to believe in such rumours.
