Tur dal on a bull run, costs Rs 185 per kg

Hyderabad, Oct 14: Tur dal (kandi pappu) is on a bull run for the past few days. It is now selling for Rs 185 a kg in the retail market, double the price of chicken. The prices of most other dals too are well over Rs 100 per kg. The jump registered an increase of Rs 10-30 per kg since September. However, the rates shown by Department of Consumer Affairs claim that tur dal is being sold for over Rs 101. According to officials the prices of the tur dal are on a bull run due to a shortage in the production of dal this year. The officials further say that there could be no relief till the end of December this year. The central government, sources said, is planning to wait for another 10 days before going in for imports from Myanmar and Africa. As the pulses' crop is likely to be lower by 30 per cent, sources said, the rates could continue to be higher. Sources said last week, the central government had purchased 6,000 tonnes of tur dal from Malawi in Africa for $1,425 a tonne.
