Delhi law students takes political parties to court

New Delhi, Sept 8: A third-year law student, identified as Ruby Malik, is said to have gone to the court alleging political parties are crossing all limits during Delhi University's students union elections. In the past these union elections acted as a spring-boarded to several important political careers. This year, the election is to be held in four days from now. Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party's youth wing the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) is expected to clash with BJP's student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Congress' National Students Union of India (NSUI) in the elections. According to Malik, Supreme Court rules confirm that a candidate for a college election cannot spend more than Rs. 5,000. He also cannot deface the public property by displaying publicity material. The SC also bans vehicle rallies in addition to printed posters. It, however, permits handmade posters. Malik says contestants ignore all these guidelines and spend in lakhs.
