Purchase of helmet along with 2-wheeler not compulsory: HC

Hyderabad, Sept 7: High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad today ruled that it is not compulsory to buy a helmet at the time of purchasing a two-wheeler. It may be recalled that the Road Transport Authority of Telangana was proposing to make it compulsory for the purchase of a helmet along with a two-wheeler. The court, however, advised the RTA to first build awareness among prospective vehicle owners on the importance of buying and wearing a helmet while driving. A special 15-day awareness drive can be taken on the importance of helmets, the court said. The government's advocate is believed to have submitted to the court that 92,164 cases were registered against two-wheeler owners since June 2014 for not wearing helmets.
