A severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal is rapidly moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh coast and is likely to make landfall in the next few hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, the system has been moving west-northwestwards at a speed of about 7 kmph over the past six hours. As of 5:30 pm on Wednesday, it was centred extremely close to the north Andhra coast — approximately 30 km southwest of Kalingapatnam and 90 km northeast of Visakhapatnam.
The cyclone is expected to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Gopalpur (Odisha), near Kalingapatnam, within the next three to four hours.
Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall Forecast
Under the influence of the system, light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam in the next 24 hours. North coastal Andhra Pradesh is particularly at risk, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at several places and isolated extremely heavy falls.
Strong winds with speeds of 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are also forecast along the coast.
In Rayalaseema, light rain or thundershowers are likely at many places, with isolated heavy falls. Winds of 40–50 kmph are expected in the region.
After crossing the coast, the system is likely to weaken gradually. While rainfall intensity may reduce after September 24, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds could continue for another couple of days.
Advisories and Precautions
The IMD has advised coastal residents to remain in safe locations and has strongly urged fishermen not to venture into the sea.
In response to the weather warnings, authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Visakhapatnam, Manyam and Vizianagaram districts.
Officials have urged the public and local administrations to remain fully alert and take all necessary precautions.
