AP, TS lose 700 medical seats

Hyderabad, June 18: The Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states have lost 350 medical seats each for the academic year 2015-16 as Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to reduce the intake in private medical colleges in both the states. Students joining MBBS course in convener and management quota are likely to be affected with the decision. The MCI has recommended a reduction of 300 seats in Malla Reddy Medical College and Malla Reddy Medical College for Women in Telangana. Similarly, MCI scrapped 300 seats in Vishwa Bharathi and NRI medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh. In all MCI scrapped 700 seats in both the Telugu states. The MCI refused permission to ESI Medical College in Hyderabad citing inadequate infrastructure. ESI applied for permission to start medical college with an intake of 200 students. The AP government has accorded autonomous status to Gitam Medical College, which has an intake of 150 seats. The colleges conferred with autonomous status will not come under the purview of Dr NTR Health University and follow their own admission structure and fee pattern. The students are worried as more private medical colleges in the State may follow suit which will result in reduction of seats in convener quota.
