Chicken prices skyrocket
Hyderabad, June 15: There was a comedy scene in a Telugu movie. A miser hangs a hen in front of him and eats plain rice, imagining as if he is enjoying rice with chicken curry. This scene then was a mere thought to generate humour. But it seems it may turn into reality with the prices of chicken and eggs skyrocketing.
Due to excessive hot summer and bird flu attack, lakhs of chicken died. The poultry farmers themselves killed lakhs, afraid of bird flu virus. This eventually decreased the number of hens and egg production in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states.
According to sources, the price of a kilo of chicken today is more than Rs. 200. Single egg is costing Rs. 5. People, earlier, used to consume chicken almost five days a week, now a chicken dish is confined to one or two days a week.
A retail chicken shop owner in Hyderabad said that earlier they used to sell over 4,000 kgs chicken on Sunday alone. Now the figure has come down to a mere 2000 kgs.
The chicken lovers are lamenting over the steep hike in the prices of their favourite food.
