Licenses of 8975 NGOs cancelled by Centre

New Delhi, April 28, 2015: In a major decision, the Centre has cancelled the licenses of 8975 NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) for non-compliance of its orders on filing annual returns for the last three financial years. On October 16 last year, the Centre has asked 10,343 NGOs to file their annual returns with in a month for the last three years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12. These NGOs were asked to file details of funds received from abroad, sources of the funds received and how they were spent. 8975 NGOs preferred to ignore the notices sent by the Union Home Ministry. In orders communicated to the respective NGOs, district collectors where such NGOs were registered and the RBI, the Home Ministry said that the licenses of these organisations have been cancelled for non-compliance of its orders. Only 229 NGOs had replied with details and the rest simply ignored the Centre's orders. The
