India-Pakistan Tensions Flare as Jawan Faces Torture Across Border
An Indian soldier from the Border Security Force (BSF), Purnam Kumar Shaw, was reportedly subjected to severe torture by Pakistani forces after inadvertently crossing into Pakistan territory near the international border close to Punjab. The incident, which had remained under wraps, has now come to light. Shaw, who was held captive for 21 days, was eventually handed back to Indian authorities.
According to available information, Pakistani authorities allegedly treated Purnam Kumar Shaw in an extremely inhumane manner after taking him into custody. During his detention, his eyes were reportedly blindfolded continuously, and he was deliberately deprived of sleep, causing intense physical and psychological distress. Furthermore, reports suggest that he was routinely verbally abused and mentally harassed by Pakistani personnel. Shaw endured these harrowing conditions for three weeks before finally returning to Indian soil.
The exact circumstances under which Shaw entered Pakistani territory while on duty along the international border remain unclear. However, the conduct of the Pakistani authorities towards an Indian soldier has raised serious concern. Even in the case of prisoners of war, international norms mandate humane treatment. The harsh actions against a soldier who crossed the border by mistake have been noted as a matter of grave concern. It remains to be seen how senior Indian officials will respond to the incident.
