Mango, King of fruits, is dearer
Hyderabad, April 4: The arrival of the king of fruits, mango, in Hyderabad from Andhra pradesh has been delayed by at least two weeks, according to Gaddiannaram Market Committee secretary K Janardhan Reddy. Janardhan Reddy said the fruit is not yet fipe and hence the delay in arrival. on Thursday, just 700 tonnes of the fruit had arrived at the Gaddiannaram Market. Normally the market receives 250 mango-laden lorries every day from the second week of March itself. However, this season, the market is receiving just about 100 mango-laden lorries, according to Gaddiannaram Market statistics. Some of the other reasons for this shortfall in supply include unseasonal drizzles, inadequate and insufficint rainfall. With the result, the price of the fruit is skyhigh. The market price for a tonne of the fruit currently ranges between Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000, as per the market statistics. During normal season, at least two lakh tonnes of different varieties of mango including Banganapalli, Doseri, Totapuri and Himayat generally arrive at the market from Krishna, Guntur, Karnool, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Ranga Reddy and Ananthapur districts.
