Surat: On Thursday, a Surat court convicted Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress, in a defamation case that was filed against him in 2019. The case was filed by a Gujarat BJP MLA, Purnesh Modi, over Gandhi's statement that "all thieves have Modi surname". Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail under Section 504 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace. The complaint alleged that Gandhi's statement defamed the entire Modi community and was filed under IPC sections 499 and 500, which deal with defamation. This remark made by Gandhi caused a lot of controversy and has now led to his conviction in the defamation case.
