India's Supreme Court has urged the country's federal government to explore more appropriate ways of carrying out the death penalty. Currently, prisoners facing the death penalty are executed by hanging in India. The court's suggestion came during a hearing on a petition filed by advocate Rishi Malhotra, who proposed replacing death by hanging with less painful methods such as lethal injection or electrocution. The Apex court asked the government to consider forming an expert committee to reassess the country's approach to executing prisoners. The counsel argued that the sentence should be carried out with the least amount of pain and avoid torture.
