TS Govt announces onion policy to wipe tears

The Telangana government is trying to wipe tears over onions. The government has brought out a virtual onion policy, knowing the commodity's importance to the common man. The government said onion hoarding should be based on the population of a place. Making a gazette notification, it said there would be licences, storage order and regulations. Under the policy, traders can hold 75 quintals onions each in cities with one million population, 40 quintals in big towns, and 30 quintals in villages. Every onion trader must seek a licence from the government. The traders should not purchase onions at prices lower than that determined by the government. They should also not exceed the price determined by the govrnment in retail. In case onion prices shoot up, the government would step in to sell onions through the ration shops.
