Maharashtra: The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, renowned socio-political activist and author Arun Gandhi passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, after a short illness. The funeral will be held in Kolhapur later today, according to family sources. Born in Durban on April 14, 1934, to Manilal Gandhi and Sushila Mashruwala, Arun Gandhi followed in his grandfather's footsteps by becoming an activist in his own right. For the past 24 years, Arun Gandhi had been visiting Avani Sanstha, an organization run by activist Anuradha Bhosale that supports girls and homeless women. According to Bhosale, Arun Gandhi fell ill before planning to leave and was admitted to Aster Aadhar Hospital, where he recovered and returned to Avani Sanstha. However, doctors advised him not to travel. On Monday evening, the group celebrated Maharashtra Day, during which Arun Gandhi encouraged the girls to hold their state and country close to their hearts. He spent the night writing and passed
