Smriti Irani, the minister for women and children's development, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress, got into a spat in the Lok Sabha on Friday over the use of the word "gentleman." Ms. Irani used the term "gentleman" while responding to Chandra Sekhar Sahu of the BJD's follow-up question about fortified food for kids; Chowdhury objected, saying she should have used the term "honourable member" in accordance with parliamentary protocol. Irani said that Chowdhury was interfering with her response in an effort to win favour with his political bosses and create a stir. In the meantime, Smriti Irani thanked the BJD member for addressing her as "honourable madam" when posing the second supplemental question. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury then questioned her use of the word "gentleman" once again.
