Masala Kichidi


1.Rice 1 cup
2.Toor dal 1/2 cup
3.Oil 4 tbsp
4.Butter 2 tbsp
5.Cumin seeds 1/2 tbsp
6.Cinnamon stick 1 inch
7.Asafoetida a pinch
8.Raw peanuts 2 tbsp
9.Turmeric powder 1/4 tbsp
10.Black pepper 1/2 tbsp
11.Ground cloves 1/4 tbsp
12.Onion 1 medium chopped
13.Garlic 4 cloves
14.Green chillies to taste
15.Ginger 1 tbsp
16.Potato 1 medium
17.Green peas 1/2 cup
18.Salt to taste
19.Red chili powder to taste


1. Combine Rice and Toor Daal and wash.
2.Add 3 cups water and soak for 15-20 minutes.
3.Heat Oil and Clarified Butter in a pressure cooker,add cumin seeds,cinnamon stick,raw peanuts and mix well.Cook till peanuts turn light brown colour.
4. Add Asofoetida, Turmeric Powder, Ground Cloves and Black Pepper. Mix quickly.
5.Add onion chopped and mix well.
6.Add Garlic, Green Chilies and Ginger. Mix and cook for about 1 minute.
7. Add Potatoes, Peas, Salt, Red Chili Powder and mix well.
8.Add Rice and Daal with Water.Adjust salt,red chilli powder and give it a mix.
9.Close the pressure cooker, cook until 1 whistle, immediately switch off the stove.
10. Wait until the pressure from the cooker is gone.Serve hot.
