Gujarati Daal


1.Toor daal 11/2 cup soaked for 20 minutes
2.Raw peanuts 1/4 cup
3.Fenugreek seeds 1/8 tbsp
4.Salt to taste
5.Turmeric powder 1/4 tbsp
6.Red chilli powder 1/2 tbsp
7.Coriander powder 2 tbsp
8.Cumin powder 1 tbsp
9.Garam masala powder 1 tbsp
10.Kokum 3-4
11.Green chillies 2
12.Tomato 1 medium chopped
13.Jaggery 3 tbsp
14.Dry mango powder 1 tbsp
15.Ginger 2 tbsp
16.Lemon juice 1 tbsp
17.Coriander leaves
18.Oil 2 tbsp
19.Ghee 2 tbsp
20.Mustard seeds 1/2 tbsp
21.Cumin seeds 1/2 tbsp
22.Asafoetida a pinch
23.Dried red chilli 1
24.Cloves 4
25.Cinnamon stick 1 inch piece
26.Curry leaves


1.Pressure cook the toor dal along with fenugreek seeds,water,salt,peanuts and turmeric powder.
2.Cook for 4-5 whistles.
3.Remove the lid and switch back to medium heat,add red chilli powder,cumin powder,coriander powder,garam masala powder,kokum,green chillies,tomato,ginger,jaggery.
4. Mix well and add up to 4 cups of water to attain desired consistency.
5.Cook for 10 minutes,meanwhile take another pan pour some oil and heat it.
6.Add mustard seeds,cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle for few seconds.
7.Add Fenugreek Seeds, Whole Cloves, Cinnamon Stick, Asofoetida (Hing), Whole Dried Red Chili, and Curry Leaves.
8.Add Lemon/Lime juice and/or Dry mango powder and mix well.
9. Adjust sweetness (jaggery), salt or any other spices as needed.
10.Garnish with Cilantro (coriander leaves) and serve hot with plain white rice or roti.
