Supreme Court cancels suspension of 12 Maharashtra BJP MLAs
The Supreme Court overturned the suspension of 12 Maharashtra BJP MLAs from the Assembly for a year on Friday, ruling that the action was arbitrary, unconstitutional, and unlawful.
A bench led by Justice A M Khanwilkar ruled that the MLAs could not be suspended beyond the conclusion of the session. The court reinstated them, ruling that the resolutions are malicious in the eyes of the law, ineffectual, and outside the authority of the Assembly.
In the last year, during the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly, 12 BJP MLAs were suspended for a year for allegedly misbehaving with the presiding officer in the Assembly Speaker's chamber.
