At least eight fans killed in football stadium stampede at Cameroon
According to the Central African nation's official broadcaster, a stampede outside a Cameroon stadium where the host team qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals on Monday killed nearly eight people and wounded more than 20 others.
Crowds attempted to enter the Yaounde Olembe stadium in Yaounde's city to witness Cameroon defeat Comoros 2-1 in Africa's premier football event. While the stadium's capacity of 60,000 was reduced to 60% due to the coronavirus, the maximum for national team matches is set at 80%.
The Confederation of African Football, which oversees the continent's premier championship, has conveyed its condolences in the wake of the unfortunate occurrence.
