On November 11, actress Kangana Ranaut sparked a controversy by claiming that India won true freedom in 2014, presumably alluding to the Narendra Modi-led Government taking power, and referring to the country's independence in 1947 as bheek (alms).
On November 14, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, pleading with him to revoke the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, conferred on star Kangana Ranaut for statements purportedly disparaging the country's independence.
Maliwal stated in the letter that the actor made several mean comments that disgraced the country's noble independence heroes. She has also urged that the actress be charged for sedition.
