Sukmawati Sukarnoputri, daughter of former Indonesian president, converts to Hinduism from Islam
Sukmawati Sukarnoputri has converted to Hinduism from Islam at ‘Sudhi Wadani’ ceremony held in Bali on Tuesday. The 70-year-old is the daughter of Indonesia's founding president Sukarno. She was married to Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegara IX but got divorced in 1984.
Sukmawati started her political career after her divorce and founded the Indonesian national party. Reports suggest that the late balinese grandmother of Sukmawati influenced her decision to convert to Hinduism. In 2018, hardline Islamic groups filed a blasphemy complaint against Sukmawati for reciting a poem that insulted Islam. Later, she tendered an apology. Islam is the largest religion in Indonesia and Hinduism is one of the 6 official religions of the country.
