The Taliban fired bullets into the air on Tuesday to disperse protesters gathering in the capital for an anti-Pakistan demonstration, the latest demonstration since the hardline organisation came to power last month. The Taliban have yet to form the government, but Afghans afraid of a repetition of the group's last harsh rule, which lasted from 1996 to 2001.
Protests were also held at Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif. Protesters, mostly women, gathered outside the Pakistani consulate on Tuesday, carrying banners and demanding azadi (freedom). Journalists, who covered the demonstrations were detained, according to reports.
