Nadia Ghulam, born and brought up in Kabul (Afghanistan) in 1985, had to disguise herself as a male for ten years in order to support her family under the Taliban's reign almost two decades ago. However, she sustained some severe injuries as a result of an explosion, and she was able to escape the country for treatment with the assistance of an NGO. Her family members, however, remain in Afghanistan, which is now under the hands of Taliban militants. Nadia wanted to tell her experience to the whole world after settling in Spain as an Afghan refugee. During this time, Nadia co-wrote a book, 'The Secret of My Turban,' with journalist Agnes Rotger. The book won the renowned Prudenci Bertrana award in 2010 and received national acclaim.
