Watch: Rio de Janeiro lights up 2016 Olympic flame as 2020 Games begin
Despite massive protests calling for the Games to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Japan has decided to hold the Tokyo 2020 Olympics behind closed doors. As the 2020 Olympic Games started, Rio de Janeiro re-lit the Olympic torch. The flame will remain lit throughout the Tokyo Olympic Games and it will be extinguished during the closing ceremony.
The Olympic flame is one of the Games' most well-known emblems. The flame was carried by Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes. Rio de Janeiro was the Olympic host city in 2016. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place in Japan from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
